  • Black History Month - Flag Raising recap

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Black History Month flag raising today! It was so great to see folks from so many different organizations and corners of the community.

For folks who were unable to attend, I am sharing some of the coverage of the event. Steven Cook from Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History spoke about both some of the accomplishments and things to celebrate in our community and provided examples of why we still have work to do to understand and address anti-Black racism in Chatham-Kent.

Have a read on the Chatham Daily News: Education... Continue reading

  • Live Online 'Antiracism at Work' Workshop by Selam Debs

On Wednesday, February 15th, 12:00pm-1:00pm (ET) join an online workshop held by Selam Debs. This workshop will address common antiracism challenges in the workplace such as:

    • lack of representation
    • tokenization
    • daily racism (macro-aggression)
    • white centering
    • a "words-only" approach

and how Black, Indigenous, and racialized employees, customers, partners, and communities are being harmed by not prioritizing antiracism and equity:

    • having to code-switch
    • being asked to educate colleagues.
    • tone-policed
    • fearful of sharing their experiences of racism
    • feeling exhausted and disheartened

Register for this event at Selam Debs website.

  • Inter-County Baseball Team Re-Naming

You’re likely seeing/hearing a lot about the re-naming of the Inter-County Baseball League. I want to unpack this a bit and put out a few things to consider about this and for our own work too:

After a Mis-Step: Apologize and do better.

This is a great example of what to do when something is brought to our attention related to DEIJ. We all have more to learn. And, we all make mis-steps. This is a good example where folks are acknowledging the mistake, committing to doing better, and moving on. This is generally the approach to take. Remember, the... Continue reading

  • Article: CK Part of National Immigration Wave

Like most of Canada, immigration is driving the growth in our population in Chatham-Kent.

Data from the 2021 census – Canada’s most recent – shows immigration is helping drive a population increase in the municipality...

According to Audrey Ansell, Director of Community Attraction and Promotion: Chatham-Kent’s overall population is just short of 104,000, of that 9.1 per cent are immigrants – foreign born. That’s up from 8.7 per cent.”

The most recent census data, released in late October, showed 845 people settled in Chatham-Kent during that four-year period who were born in another country.
