Chatham-Kent currently operates 8 waste transfer stations and 10 leaf and yard depots throughout the Municipality.
Transfer stations are the primary waste collection method for rural residents who do not receive curbside service.
Transfer stations are also open to urban and rural residents for disposal of select divertible materials free of charge, with set limits.
Harwich and Wallaceburg are also open to urban curbside residents for excess waste disposal at a fee.
Waste Management Facilities By-law
As part of ongoing efforts to improve service delivery, the Municipality is developing a new Waste Management Facilities By-law. The overall services currently offered at waste facilities will remain unchanged under the by-law.
Between March and April this year, Waste Management staff completed on-site public engagement surveys at waste facilities to better understand residential needs and use of these facilities. Survey results were analyzed, and the following recommendations are proposed to be included as provisions in the by-law:
Weekly garbage limit of 6 bags per household at all transfer stations.
Annual bulk limit of 12 items per household at all transfer stations.
Tractors beyond compact size (up to 60 horsepower, 54” width, and 6,000lbs) be prohibited on the premises at all municipal waste facilities.
Trailers with a bed length of over 12 feet be prohibited on the premises at all municipal waste facilities.
Tractors, oversized vehicles, and hydraulic lift equipment be prohibited from entering buildings at municipal waste facilities.
