Changes to the Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Program

The Municipality currently provides Brush and Leaf collection services in eight communities and operating nine Leaf and Yard depots throughout the community.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve service delivery, the Municipality has considered changes to some of the operations. Before implementing any changes, residents were invited to share their comments and feedback.

Considered Changes

  1. For communities currently subject to a clear bag mandate for Brush and Leaf collection, the Municipality is considering transitioning to a paper bag mandate. This change aims to reduce environmental impact by minimizing plastic waste and promote sustainability by encouraging the use of biodegradable materials. Paper bags are easily recyclable and compostable, offering a more eco-friendly option than plastic bags. Moreover, they are durable and convenient for collecting yard waste, presenting a practical solution for homeowners while contributing to a healthier environment for our communities.
  2. The other proposed change involves the closure of the Tilbury Leaf & Yard Depot, located at 4 Tower Street, Tilbury. Operational challenges associated with this location have prompted this recommendation. Residents of Tilbury already benefit from weekly brush, grass, and leaf pick-up services at the curb during the spring, summer, and fall months. While this depot has served residents of the surrounding areas, mounting operational pressures and costs have prompted the need for consideration.

The survey has now concluded. This page will currently maintained for information purposes.

Conclusions

  • Communities will transition to a paper bag collection. Starting January 1, 2025, leaf and yard waste will no longer be accepted in clear plastic bags at the curb. Residents must use paper bags, available at most retailers. Until January 2025, there is a grace period during which plastic bags will still be collected, but the use of paper bags is recommended.
  • The Tilbury Leaf and Yard Depot will continue to be open at this time. The depot is no longer suitable for its intended use. Nonetheless, recommendations for any alterations to its status or adjustments to the leaf and yard waste collection service levels will be presented to the Council within the framework of the Organics Waste Diversion Program.
